Case Study
We were ousted from the Churchill Room by a painting group so it was a difficult book group of shouting at each other over mediocre music in the main room of Effra Social. Welcome to the new people – it’s usually a lot easier to hear what’s going on.
That aside both books went down well, with lots of people reading both Hotel du Lac and Convenience Store Woman. Very different in style and atmosphere, but both concerned with women that felt pressure from society to conform and get married, but weren’t really suited to it.
Our next book is Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnet (previous winner of our best book of the year in 2019 for His Bloody Project https://brixtonbookgroup.com/do-something-wonderful/ ). It’s on the Booker Long List, and hopefully he’ll enjoy us asking him increasingly silly questions on Twitter again like we did that time.

Runners up were:
After Sappho – Selby Wynn Schwartz
Outlawed – Anna North
Hamnet – Maggie O’Farrell
Home Fire – Kamila Shamsie
Pleasant View – Eleste Mohammed
We’ll be meeting on 1st September, hopefully back in the Churchill Room at the front of Effra Social, but keep an eye out for updates nearer the time in case we end up elsewhere. Everyone is welcome to join – just look for the people with the books. We meet from 19.30, to start book discussion around 20.00.
