Suite Francaise

Kafka on the Shore was kind of strange but definitely got a positive reaction from most people.

Pete didn’t manage to Skype in, but did send a pre-prepared doodle for us to use.

Kafka on the Shore

There were some good suggestions, but the winner was Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, proving that repeated nominations can eventually work.

Other suggestions were:
The Shock of the Fall – Nathan Filer
Consolations of Philosophy/The Art of travel – Alain de Botton
The Magus – John Fowles
The Book Thief – Markus Zusak
A Suitable Boy – Vikram Seth

We’ve booked the ‘Churchill Room’ at Effra Social again for the next meeting on March 20th.

Hello Kitty!

Our first meeting of 2014 was a packed affair – despite the best efforts of the Victoria Line to thwart our plans. I feel slightly bad for the two people who opted to have a quiet drink in the Winston Churchill room of the Effra Social.

Mostly everyone liked the Blind Assassin, including the science fiction bits. Tom’s going to write a review for the blog* so watch this space.

The book for next time is Kafka On The Shore by Haruki Murakami

We’re meeting on Thursday the 20th of February in the front room of the Effra Social (we have a booking – sorry the 27th was taken, so I’ll Skype in)

Runners up included: Ghana Must Go, Disgrace, The Hearing Trumpet, A Tale For The Time Being, Suite Francais, The Art of Travel / Consolations of Philosophy, Stoner and the Buddha in the Attic.

*As you might have noticed we now have a shiny new website for 2014 – hopefully all the links and feeds should still work (sorry if you got a repeat message) – a few members have been asking if they can post reviews so please get in touch if you’re feeling creative.

The Blind Assassin – Margaret Atwood

We had a good chat about Americanah, which had some great characters and I think most people enjoyed despite having backache from lugging about a massive hardback for while.

The next meeting is not going to be until January 23rd so we’ve got absolutely ages. With this in mind we have 2 books! The main book is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. The supplementary book if you fancy a second read is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Both great reads, and Owen Meany has a brilliant school nativity scene in it so it’s vaguely festive. Anyway feel free to read either, both or even neither and come along on Jan 23rd for the traditionally massive 1st meeting of the year after you all make resolutions to read more…

UPDATE: As Mango Landin is closed we’re now meeting in the Effra Social from 7.30pm

We had an excellent list of other suggestions too:
The Yellow Birds – Kevin Powers
Trumpet – Jackie K
The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
The Grass is Singing – Doris Lessing
Skagboys – Irvine Welsh
A Confedaracy of Dunces – John Kennedy O’Toole
Suite Francaise – Irene Nemirovsky

I’ve posted about the Christmas party separately (it’s on Dec 10th) so hope to see you there, but if not then have a great Christmas and New Year and see you in January.
