The Blind Assassin – Margaret Atwood

We had a good chat about Americanah, which had some great characters and I think most people enjoyed despite having backache from lugging about a massive hardback for while.

The next meeting is not going to be until January 23rd so we’ve got absolutely ages. With this in mind we have 2 books! The main book is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. The supplementary book if you fancy a second read is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Both great reads, and Owen Meany has a brilliant school nativity scene in it so it’s vaguely festive. Anyway feel free to read either, both or even neither and come along on Jan 23rd for the traditionally massive 1st meeting of the year after you all make resolutions to read more…

UPDATE: As Mango Landin is closed we’re now meeting in the Effra Social from 7.30pm

We had an excellent list of other suggestions too:
The Yellow Birds – Kevin Powers
Trumpet – Jackie K
The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
The Grass is Singing – Doris Lessing
Skagboys – Irvine Welsh
A Confedaracy of Dunces – John Kennedy O’Toole
Suite Francaise – Irene Nemirovsky

I’ve posted about the Christmas party separately (it’s on Dec 10th) so hope to see you there, but if not then have a great Christmas and New Year and see you in January.

Christmas Party!

It’s time for the BBG Christmas Party! We had a vote for the best date and Tuesday 10th December won the day (sorry to anyone who can’t make it).

We’ll meet in Mango Landin for a drink first at usual time of 7.30/8ish, then head over to Khans for a curry at approx 8.30. Please RSVP so we have an idea of numbers. Khan’s is BYO if you want to bring anything particular, or there is an offie next door.

There is also an optional SECRET SANTA. If you want to take part just bring along a wrapped up book of your choice (it can be new/secondhand/whatever), they all go into a bag/pile and everyone that put one in gets a different one out. Exciting!!

Bring up the bodies…

We had loads of people come and chat about the surprisingly modern Dangerous Liaisons, and after two rounds of voting and a coin toss the book for next time is:

I’m shattered

Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel – here’s a link to the eBook or order it from a local bookshop.

We read the previous book in the trilogy a while back, although this does stand up well on it’s own. As it’s a longer book we’ll be meeting on the 31st of October in the spooky Mango Landin.

Finally – just to add I’m no longer going to be linking to books on Amazon – instead I’m using Hive which uses local bookshops instead.
