Just Kids
(Sorry, no doodle!)
It was a mammoth meeting to discuss Just Kids, and we had to rearrange a significant number of tables and chairs to make room for everyone.
I think most people enjoyed Patti Smith’s name-dropping laid-back book, and certainly a lot more people had finished it than got to the end of Umbrella.
We had lots of nominations and a pretty close vote for the new book, but the winner is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It clinched it with a quote from Ernest Hemingway that every subsequent book i n American literature owes something to it – a bold claim!
Other nominations were: 100 Years of Solitude – Gabriel Garcia Marquez I Capture the Castle – Dodie Smith The Great Gatsby – F Scott Fitzgerald Never Let Me Go – Kazuo Ishiguro The Bastard of Istanbul – Elif Shafak The Boys in the Trees – Mary Swan Hawksmoor – Peter Ackroyd The Wolf of Wall Street – Jordan Belfort
(Great Gatsby and Wolf of Wall Street were both only 1 point behind the winner, so might live to fight another day!)
We’ll be meeting on November 22nd at Mango Landin in Brixton.
We also need to set a date for the Christmas do – we’ll finalise this at the meet up on the 22nd, so if you can’t make that but are keen to come to the Christmas do let us know – potential dates look like Dec 6th or 13th.
