Pachinko
There were almost too many people to fit in the room at our meeting on Thursday. We had a discussion about the creative style of the book, what it added to the archive, who it was for, and also the themes raised by it. It was a little hectic and we ended up breaking down into smaller groups for some of the discussion, but we’ll always try to make space for everyone that wants to attend.
The voting was a bit lengthy with a draw between 2 books, then a second draw when we asked for a final vote between those 2, and eventually the winner was chosen by a somewhat fumbled coin toss. Sometimes chance trumps democracy.

The book for next time is Pachinko by Min Chin Lee. It’s pretty long so get cracking if you want to attend. We’ll be meeting on WEDNESDAY 15th MARCH (please note day/date change – Effra Social is closed on our original date of 9th) in the Churchill Room of the Effra Social. We usually meet from 7.30ish and start discussion from 8, so come along in time to grab a chair and a drink.
Other books pitched were:
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous – Ocean Vuong
London Belongs to Me – Norman Collins
A Writer’s Diary – Toby Litt
Happiness – Jack Underwood
The Pull of the Stars – Emma Donohue
The Beautifal Fall – Alicia Drake
Small Things Like These – Claire Keegan
Also a reminder we have A Dance to the Music of Time as our long read – this is a series of books and it’s going to be a while before we set a date to discuss so if you like the sound of it get started and keep a look out for updates – it’ll be a smaller group so we will set a date that suits everyone who wants to attend for that one.
