Finely balanced

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the delay in posting up the meeting! – again we had a packed meeting to discuss the double bill that was Another Day in the Death of America and The Good Immigrant.

Guns don’t kill people. rappers do. I heard it on a documentary on Radio 2.

Book for next meeting is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry – and we will be meeting on Thursday 17th of August in the Effra Social at 7.31pm.

July double bill

Hello everyone,

we had a packed meeting where we discussed the cautionary speculative-fiction tale The Power (thank heavens for the patriarchy keeping us all safe!) Pete went on slightly too long about Wonder Woman, we had a lovely pitch from Daniel about his book on Unbound, and picked 2 books to read for next time.

Generally everyone seemed to like the Power – it perhaps promised greater things than it delivered, but was nevertheless a page turner. And the Brixton Book Group continues it’s uncanny ability to predict the future and pick a prize winning book.

The Power voting sketch

Feel my electric wrath!

We have 2 books to read next time: The Good Immigrant by Nikesh Shukla and Another Day in the Death of America by Gary Younge.

Runners up included the Secret History of Wonder Woman, The Barracuda, The Handmaid’s tale, Judas, All that Man Is and The Girls.

Remember you can always re-pitch a book again if your choice missed out!

Next meeting is on Thursday the 20th of July in the Effra Social from 7.33pm. (so you have 5 weeks)

And finally:

Daniel Ross came along to plug his book on Unbound – it’s called Bobby Denise is Reigning Rampant and is described as The darkly comic story of a retired Las Vegas stage magician and big cat enthusiast, dragged back into the spotlight by the consequences of one huge mistake.

Daniel has promised to come back and hear our thoughts about the book at a meeting in the future – but only if it hits it’s target. We’ve had a couple of authors come along to our meetings, but never twice so for that alone makes it worth backing.

It’s how I like my donuts, and it’s also the name of the much trendier (and not rival- we don’t do rivalry*) Brixton book event – the Brixton Book Jam, who are returning for another event:

The next Brixton BookJam will be on Monday 5 June 2017 at their regular venue The Hootananny, Brixton.

Speakers include: Paul Bassett-Davies, Alex Wheatle, CN Lester, Toby Broom, James Nuttall, Leila Segal, Danny Scheinmann, Matthew Miles, Zelda Rhiando, Paula Lennon, Oliver Cable, Merlin Sinclair and Anne Cooper, and music from Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett.

You can find out all about it on their website:

*as long as we don’t have to duke it out with the film group** again Anchorman style.

**we love the film group really

And finally:

Next meeting date clarification: the Power

I made a mistake on the date of the next meeting which the site merrily emailed to everyone before I could correct it. We’re meeting on the 14th of June on the Wednesday in the Effra Social from 7.33pm – as always everyone is welcome.
