The Buddha of Suburbia
Maus went down well, with a lot of discussion about the family dynamics as well as how it describes the Holocaust, and the use of animals to represent different races. Apologies it was a bit difficult to get hold of – there is nothing like banning a book to increase demand for it.

The next book will be The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi. As well as the book there is a TV series with a David Bowie soundtrack, but I’m not sure its available anywhere to watch at the moment.
We’ll be meeting on April 7th at Effra Social again, usually in the front room unless something else is going on in there. We usually meet from 7.30 and start discussing the book at 8. Anyone is welcome to join us.
Other books pitched were:
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams
In Order to Live – Yeonmi Park
Grey Bees – Andrey Kurkov
Swing Time – Zadie Smith
Leonard and Hungry Paul – Ronan Hession
The Gallows Pole – Ben Myers
Shuggie Bain – Douglas Stuart
Next meeting as well as the normal pitches for our May group we’ll be doing LONG READ pitches for something longer you might want to read over the Summer for discussion in a few months.
See you there!
