The Leopard
(We don’t do a normal meeting in December, so please check out the separate post for the Christmas party.)
This event is our next normal book group meeting and its somehow in Jan 2023! Anyone is welcome, just read the book and turn up. Yes I’m talking to you, people with a New Year resolution to read more.
Beyond Black was a good meeting, who knew talking about grimy, unpleasant ghosts could fill so much time. Although people had mixed views of the book I think we all agree Hilary Mantel was an incredible talent. We also had a surprisingly big turn out for such a long book, even if not everyone finished it. I hope we inspired those that hadn’t finished to carry on to the end.
The winning book for January is The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa and we’ll be meeting on January 12th at Effra Social.

Other pitches were:
The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida – Shehan Karunatilaka
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet – David Mitchell
Love in Colour – Bolu Babalola
The Mercies – Kiran Millwood Hargrave
The Luminaries – Eleanor Catton
Empire of Pain – Patrick Keefe
Remember you can always re-pitch if something you want to read doesn’t win.
There was a bit of confusion over location in Nov – Effra Social told me the Churchill Room was booked so we’d be on the stage, but then the stage was full of a jazz band and the Churchill Room was empty after all.
For Jan apparently some corporate nonsense is going on in the Churchill Room so we are likely to be in the main room of Effra Social – just look for the people with books! (We might decamp to Churchill Room if the other event finishes early though)
We usually meet from 7.30ish and start talking about the book from 8ish.
Hello!
I would like to join the book club in November, but I am not sure what book you are reading and when the meeting is. Can you please clarify?
Thanks a lot.
Best,
Tania
Hi Tania, we already had the Nov meeting last week. This one you’ve commented on in Jan is the next book meeting.
