The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida
There were mixed thoughts on Brooklyn and its strangely directionless protagonist but this didn’t stop it being great fun to talk about, especially as everyone else in the book has much more character about them.
The film is also pretty good, so a watch of that is recommended.
The next book is The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka – the most recent Booker winner, and recently out in paperback.

Other suggestions were:
Ice – Anna Kavan
Tunnel 29 – Helena Merriman
10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World – Elif Shafak
Educated – Tara Westover
The Bookshop – Penelope Fitzgerald
The Housemaid – Freida McFadden
We’ll be meeting on 6th July, hopefully back in the Churchill Room at Effra Social. We usually start book chat around 8, but it’s advisable to get there a bit earlier to grab a drink and a seat. New members always welcome, just read the book and turn up, and bring a book idea to pitch for next time if you like.
See you there!
